The Cherry KC 200 MX looks and feels cheap, and its cable isn’t removable. The Ducky One 2 TKL lacks media and volume keys out of the box; you have to program them yourself, and there are enough missing or incorrect instructions to make the process a real pain in the ass. We had to rely on GitHub user Chris Schmich’s correct instructions for programming media keys on the One 2. The SteelSeries Apex Pro Mini offers a high-quality build and a versatile range of per-key customization options. Though designed for competitive gamers, it’s also an excellent 60% keyboard for typists who want a compact board.

The gently cupped MDA-profile keycaps feel just as comfortable as the rounded OSA-profile keycaps that come with the Keychron V Max models. And the Galaxy80’s slightly thicker keycaps contribute to the keyboard’s richer typing sound. After weeks of typing, the OSA-profile PBT keycaps that come with our picks didn’t develop any surface wear. The tenkeyless V3 Max and the full-size V6 Max have standard keycaps, so it’ll be easy to find replacements if you want to change your keyboard’s vibe. But the V5 Max has nonstandard right Shift, bottom-row, and number-pad keys that you’ll need to look out for if you replace your keycaps.

The Upside to Keyboards

My criticisms of the keyboard’s missing features are subjective, of course, but I’ll concede that the last major addition, Touch ID, is still as handy as ever for Apple users. As with the previous keyboard generation, setting up Touch ID is still a cinch. You pick your favorite finger, and lift your fingertip onto the Touch ID scanner multiple times, allowing your fingerprint to be completely scanned. The whole process takes barely a minute, and in testing, I found it close to foolproof in terms of accurately recognizing my stored print. If your Mac is already set up with Touch ID from a previous keyboard, all you have to do is connect the new keyboard, and you should be good to go. In September, 8BitDo released a set of 165 keycaps featuring the same designs as the NES version of its Retro Mechanical Keyboard, allowing those who prefer larger layouts to customize their keyboard’s appearance to match.

It doesn’t come with a USB dongle, but the K380s is compatible with Logitech’s Bolt receiver if you want to buy one separately. The older K380 and K380 for Mac are not compatible with Logitech’s Unifying or Bolt receivers. Desktops, laptops, tablets, phones, smart TVs, and streaming devices all use Bluetooth, and the best Bluetooth keyboards can switch easily between multiple devices. For a keyboard that lacks wireless and comes with ABS keycaps, the Drop CSTM80 is expensive. The V3 Max, V5 Max, and V6 Max are only available with black cases and keycaps that are gray, black, and red.

Our sample came with Keychron’s own tactile K Pro Brown switches, but there are also clicky and linear options. Because the actual switches are cheaper, you’ll often find you get more additional features like media controls, RGB lighting, and USB passthrough baked into these decks for less cash. If you’re after a cheap gaming keyboard to fill a hole rather than see you through high performance competitions, this is the version to opt for. They have built a reputation with their well-designed and sturdy game-specific peripherals and are a favorite amongst many. They are, as the name suggests, keyboards made up of mechanical components as opposed to regular keyboards that have different layers of flexible membrane. The design is generally composed of a base, spring and stem so when a key is pressed, the switch underneath gets activated and sends the signal to indicate the pressing.

Of the keyboards we’ve tested, the Keychron V3 Max, V5 Max, and V6 Max offer the most comfortable typing experience and the most extra features for their reasonable prices. Our picks come with keycaps for Windows and Mac, and you can easily swap between the two operating-system layouts, using a switch on the back of each keyboard. If you want a better typing experience and fun extra features, we recommend the NuPhy Air75 V2 and the NuPhy Air96 V2. These low-profile mechanical keyboards are delightful to type on, and they’re available with a variety of switches. We recommend Brown switches if you’re not sure where to start, though you can swap out the switches, too. With its low-profile keycaps, comfortable switches, gorgeous RGB lighting, reliable wireless connectivity and discrete media keys, there’s a lot to like about the Logitech G915 TKL’s design and performance. The Razer BlackWidow V4 75% isn’t cheap but we argue it’s worth every dollar thanks to its compact size, responsive tactile keys, hot-swappable design and comfortable typing experience. And like most Razer products, you can reprogram the BlackWidow V4 through the Razer Synapse app. The Keychron V6 features an attractive design, smooth typing, lovely sound and fantastic build quality. It’s fully hot-swappable and available in a variety of guises to suit your needs.

It’s built really well too, with an aluminum frame plus double-shot oil-resistant PBT keycaps which won’t fade over time. Another company known for high-performance mechanical keyboards at budget prices is Womier. With a wide range of layouts, designs, switches, and keycaps, Womier has gone from a relatively unknown quantity to being recommended by some reviewers as having the best budget mechanical keyboard on the market. That board, in particular, the Womier SK71, is regarded as a great value package due to its aluminum construction, gaskets, acoustic dampening foam, and surprisingly great linear switches. If a keyboard is hot-swappable, we swap in our favorite switches and see how that changes the typing experience. We also test and review the included switches, as people buying pre-built keyboards probably aren’t looking to immediately swap out the switches.
